Random January Pictures

Wow, I am totally not blogging these days. I haven't been on the internet in a long time. So here is January

I've been feeding the birds and thoroughly enjoying it. Now that days are longer and it is full day light at 7:30am those little guys start singing at my door at 7:30 to get their food (I take it in at night so other animals don't eat it), as a result they get me out of bed and I call them "the breakfast crowd".

Whiskey jacks... the first to come. They were here months ago

The new project for January is to cut my own wood. So I cut down tress with a chainsaw (that Curtis gave me) and put them in the old truck, split them if needed and stack it. I tell you it is actually a lot of work especially in the snow at this time of the year. I am getting fitter all the time.
This is where I cut trees and the trees in the background are the trees I cut.

Here is some of the result.

And when the chainsaw stops it is back to beautiful quiet serene winter landscape.

One day gong home after cutting wood the light of the sun setting was just hitting the top of the trees and I even had my camera to try and capture it, but of course, take my word for it,  the photos do not do it justice.

Lots of snow for that little tree.

In a way I do believe that the old truck and the cabin do fit together.

Random Pictures for November

Somehow I am not blogging a lot, but this "random pictures for the month" thing seems to work for me.

The quintessential northern Skidoo

I was in Calgary briefly this month and these are photos of one of my favourite thing in Calgary, a "recycled metal" horse sculpture", a huge thing way bigger than life size.

From the municipal garbage dump (called "nuisance ground" here) the pattern of ravens wings as they take off.

Muching with a quad as opposed to a sledge

This curious owl spotted me and took off soon after

A little woodpecker

Just snow on a branch of jack pine

Snowy landscapes

Fluffy squirrel

Snow piling up on the steps I never use

Ptarmigan prints across the Salt River

The whiskey jack coming to eat his breakfast on my front steps

A big wood pecker. Love the red cap!

Random Pictures for September 2015

First, Buffalo meat.
A. got a buffalo and I went to visit to see him dry the meat.

A. very generously gave me some buffalo meat and it was very good. I had five meals out of it, first steaks, then I made a stew. Delicious! It was a real treat.

Here are some buffalo prints from Salt Plains in Wood Buffalo National Park

Also bear prints at Salt Plains

Just a view of Salt Plains but looking back away from the plains

And here is the salt around the path of the small salted stream

I also dried some shaggy names. I didn't know they could be dried until I saw a recipe calling for dry shaggy manes.

Traditional canvas tent, looking lovely in the meadow with fall colours.

Star grass, at least that's what I call it because it reminds me of stars in the the dark sky.

Spruce grouse in a tree. You can see how it is starting to turn white.
Here is another one trying to hide in the grass

and this is a ruffle grouse... easy to see why

The 34" connie (their real is inconnue I found out) I caught myself with my small fishing rod. I was SO happy. I had enough to share. That was a great feeling. And I now have a fishing story!!!! how cool is that?!?!

Sun flooding the table at the cabin. What a great time of year. This fall has been absolutely gorgeous.
